Green Commitment

We are very passionate at Twentieth Century to ensure that we are do what we can to help the environment, which we are constantly finding new ways to improve and are proud to member of 'Green Tourism'.

We use this as our guide to ensure we have high standards and offer a unique B&B experience for our customers.

THE HOUSE: Twentieth Century was built in 1935. Various aspects have been altered over the decades, with many of its original features unfortunately being removed, along with unsympathetic additions. We have worked hard to put back the charm of this Art Deco house, whilst making it as energy efficient as possible. To that end we have replaced the existing flat roof with insulated EPDM. We have been able to insulate part of the exterior and re-rendered the whole of the outside. The former PVC windows were replaced with A+ rated double thermally insulated aluminium 1930s style windows.

FURNITURE: Most of our furniture in the house comes from the Art Deco and Mid-Century period. We have been all over the country sourcing the right pieces for the B&B. Some have been restored, bringing these items back to life contributes to Twentieth Century’s unique charm.

TOILETERIES: Our guests love the 'Faith in Nature' products that we have selected for you during your stay that use natural, cruelty-free, vegan, ingredients and smell gorgeous. Our tissues and toilet paper are made from 100% forest friendly Bamboo from the company 'Who gives a crap' who give half of their profits to build much needed toilets in developing countries.

HONEY, JAM, MARMALADE AND FRUITS: We always use local producers. The honey we use is bought from local bee keepers. The jams and marmalades are currently either home made for us by friends or local producers. Next year we plan to start making are own jams and preserves to offer our guests. When in season, we will offer fresh and stewed fruits picked from our own garden.

VEGGIE AND VEGAN BREAKFAST OPTIONS: Kat has been a vegetarian for over 30 years, so we know the importance of ensuring that there is a good range of breakfast options for everyone. We like to ensure that everyone is catered for so we always ask if there are any dietary requirements, as it’s important to us that our guests thoroughly enjoy the start of your day.

EGGS AND MEAT: Our eggs are local and delivered to us fresh directly to us from Dave our egg man. Bacon and sausages we get from the butchers at Quex Farm in Birchington. They make their own sausages and use local animals for their meat that are all outdoor reared.

TEA, COFFEE, HOT CHOCOLATE, CEREALS AND SUGAR: Where possible we try and ensure that these products are both Fairtrade and organic.

RECYCLING: We are very keen to separate our waste so plastics, paper, cans, glass, card, food waste and bulky garden waste are all collected by our local councils recycling service. We ask our customers if they would help us with the recycling and use the recycling bins provided for our customers.

Vegetable and fruit peelings along with some of the garden waste are placed in our compost bins in the garden and use when ready for growing our own fruit and veg.

TRANSPORT: You can easily get to us by public transport by train from London Victoria, London St Pancras and Stratford International to Birchington-on-Sea, which is a 10 minute walk from Twentieth Century. Additionally, National Express have regular coaches that depart London Victoria and stop at several pick up points along the route to Birchington. We are also very near a local bus services to Margate, Ramsgate and Canterbury.

Twentieth Century is situated on a corner plot. There is ample parking in front and to the side of the house. If you have an electric car there are several recharging points located at various sites across Thanet.
